The Chithambara Maths Challenge
Fri 14 Jul 2023The Chithambara Maths Challenge is a charity organisation hosted by the Chithambara School, located in North Sri Lanka. They host this challenge in the UK and other countries worldwide annually. This year I participated in the challenge for the third time. I found the test challenging but not too bad, but to my surprise, after a few months I was selected to attend the award ceremony. I went to the award ceremony in Croydon with my family. At the ceremony I was really nervous because there were approximately 200 children invited, and they ordered us in ascending order (according to our marks). When they called me up to the stage, they announced my marks and rank. However, before I could hear the announcement, there was an enthusiastic round of applause by the audience. I felt very proud of myself as I realised that I had achieved the 4th rank with 96%. Abishaya K 4 Puffin.

Year 6 PGL trip Day 5 - 'Homeward Bound'
Fri 07 Jul 2023We made it!!
Five days away from home, full of fun, challenges and learning new skills and what a time it’s been!
After breakfast we had to strip our beds and move our luggage out of our rooms. We all found this tricky, and more than a few bottles, towels and pants had to be reclaimed by their owners!
Today we had our final 2 activities from:
Abseiling down a steep wall; Survivor where we learned how to whittle tent pegs, light a fire with a flint and build a waterproof shelter; Problem Solving where we were set challenges like saving “toxic waste” from “lava” and solving riddles; and Orienteering where we had our final chance to explore the site.
After a lovely lunch, we said goodbye to our fantastic leader Paige and now we’re on the road (we might have a cheeky nap too!)
See you in a couple of hours!

Year 6 Activity week
Fri 07 Jul 2023This week the Year 6s at school have had a fantastic week full of activities and a trip or two.
On Monday we had a computing day. We got out all the robots in the school and explored what they could do all morning. In the afternoon we tried completing some Micro:bit coding challenges too.
We went on a trip to St Albans on Tuesday. We got on the train from the North Watford and took it to the end of the line at St Albans Abbey. While we were in St Albans, we walked around the park and went in the play area before lunch. After lunch we went to the Cathedral where a resident expert on the story of St Albans spoke to us and then set us off on a trail around the Cathedral to find out more about the historic building.
We joined the rest of the school for Art day on Wednesday. We made Bug Hotels out of recycled materials and natural resources in the morning and design our own T-Shirts or Pillowcases in the afternoon.
It was a very sporty day for us on Thursday. Mr Derick helped us design and plan our own activities and games in the morning. In the afternoon we taught the Year 3s how to play each of our games and lead the activities in our groups. It was great fun!
On Friday we started the day by finishing off things we had started during the week before walking down to Knutsford Playing Fields and the River Colne. Here we explored the wildlife found in the river and found many small shrimp-like creatures among others. We also picked up an astonishing amount of litter on a litter pick around the fields. In the afternoon we had a wonderful time in the sun playing water activities and getting rather wet.

Thu 06 Jul 2023What a day!
We started off with our usual breakfast feast before starting our day’s activities! On todays schedule:
Giant swing for those who didn’t do it yesterday.
Sensory trail, where we trooped through a woodland assault course blindfolded (the teachers really enjoyed this one)
Vertical challenge, where we had to climb a ladder, a set of tyres AND a rope!
Problem solving where we had to work together to make our way through some devilishly tricky challenges.
Orienteering, where we put our map reading skills to the test to complete challenges. After dinner we celebrated our last night with the campfire, singing songs, toasting marshmallows and playing games with a beautiful sunset in the background. Now we’re back at base for a bumper crop of cake prizes and a cheeky play before bed.
Nighty night! See you tomorrow!

Year 6 PGL trip Day 3
Wed 05 Jul 2023We had a good nights sleep- we were out as soon as our heads hit the pillow!
This morning, after another huge breakfast we started the first of today’s 4 activities. Today’s schedule was:
Raft building on Goose Poo Lake where we had to build and sail a raft made of logs and empty barrels.
Giant swing, also known as ‘giant wedgie’ - ask us why when we get back!
All Aboard where we climbed in teams up a huge wooden pole and played games at the top.
Climbing up a steep wall
Abseiling down another steep wallNeedless to say we were exhausted, but not too tired to build a protective casing for a water balloon which was thrown off a tower.
Luckily, apart from a little spot of rain and some chilly breezes, the weather’s been fine!
Stay tuned for more updates tomorrow!

Year 6 PGL trip Day 2
Tue 04 Jul 2023Surprisingly… we slept! And woke (mostly) refreshed for our first full day of PGL fun!
After a sturdy breakfast we had fun shooting arrows at each other during Archery Tag. Don’t worry, they were foam arrows!
After that we split into different activities: High Ropes where we ran around an aerial assault course; Trapeze where we climbed up a huge wooden pole then jumped into thin air to try and catch hold of a metal; and the Zip Wire where we slid across the site on a long wire.Exhausted and full of harness wedgies, we then solved lots of puzzles around the site about the world while pretending to be aeroplanes!
We’re about to have our cake and wind down, and then the teachers are hoping we’ll go to sleep, but after loading up on sweets at the tuck shop, it might be a noisy night…

Year 6 PGL trip Day 1
Tue 04 Jul 2023Aaaaaaand we’re off!!
A very excitable bunch left Parkgate and hit the road for our PGL adventure!
We made great time and arrived in time for a tour of the site (it’s huge!) before an epic game of football.
Dinner was soo tasty but we couldn’t believe how noisy the dining room was!
Our afternoon activity was Cluedo around the site. Some of our favourite challenges to win clues included: rapping to a cowboy, dancing at a penguin, and imitating a gorilla!
After we solved the crime, we chilled out with some cake and made a big fuss of Birthday Boy Thomas… and of course played a bit more football!
Off to bed now to try and get some sleep…
